About Potomac

Potomac is one of Maryland’s most established and recognizable communities. In 2013, CNNMoney identified it as the most affluent town in the United States by median household income — exceeding $240,000 — and Forbes has ranked it among the top-educated small towns in America. Set along the crossroads of Falls Road and River Road in Montgomery County, Potomac has maintained its character even as the Washington region has grown around it.

The area was originally known as Offutts Crossroads, a small rural settlement during the 1700s with roughly 100 residents by the Civil War era. In 1881, an Irish Civil War veteran named John McDonald petitioned to rename it Potomac, and the postal service agreed. Residential development expanded along Falls Road in the 1920s and 1930s, suburbanization accelerated through the 1950s, and today historic farmhouses still stand within contemporary subdivisions — including the Perry Store, relocated 21 feet in 1986 and still part of a banking facility.

Our Realtor team covers Potomac from Avenel to Winterset.
