About Rockville

Rockville holds a distinct place in Maryland’s history as one of the state’s oldest towns and the seat of Montgomery County government. The name evolved from Hungerford’s Tavern to Williamsburgh before officially becoming Rockville in 1801, named for its proximity to Rock Creek. Incorporated in 1860 and initially governed by three commissioners, the town elected its first Mayor and Council in 1888.

The opening of the Rockville depot on the B&O Railroad’s Metropolitan Branch in 1873 connected the town to Washington and catalyzed its growth. The population went from roughly 200 in 1800 to about 6,900 by 1950 — then surged to nearly 45,000 by 1980 and over 61,000 by 2010. Today Rockville is home to major biomedical corporations, federal agencies, and county offices, with a mix of established neighborhoods and newer planned communities like King Farm and Fallsgrove.

We work as your Realtor across Rockville’s diverse neighborhoods — from the New Urbanist streetscapes of King Farm to the wooded cul-de-sacs of Potomac Woods.
